Spay/Neuter Facts

SHOPP: Students Helping Overpopulated Pets Program
One of SHOPP’s goals is to raise $50,000 for spaying/ neutering homeless pets.

Please help us reach our goal!

  • Spaying/neutering is the number one way to reduce the number of homeless pets in the U.S.
  • Spaying/neutering reduces the possibility of spraying/marking.
  • Spayed/neutered animals tend to roam less – one study found that nearly 85 percent of all dogs hit by cars were not neutered.
  • Spaying/neutering often reduces aggressive behavior.
  • Spayed/neutered pets live longer (from 1 to 6 years longer) because the risks for many different types of cancer will be eliminated.
  • Spaying/neutering reduces the number of “nuisance” animals roaming the streets, potentially spreading disease.
  • Millions of tax dollars are used for the care and euthanasia of homeless animals each year.
  • Spaying/neutering an animal costs less than caring for a litter of puppies or kittens for one year.
  • Spaying/neutering can be safely performed by a licensed veterinarian at eight weeks of age or older.
  • Only about 10 percent of animals entering shelters have been spayed/neutered.
  • In New York City, all cats and dogs – even those sold in pet stores – must be spayed/neutered before they can be adopted.
